In the last few years we have witnessed a massive increase in the use of apps on mobile phones. This has led many companies to create their own apps through which they can share their services and products in an easier way. Dublin companies and institutions are no exception and I have listed a few apps that will make your life easier in this, the capital of Ireland. For those of us who live in Dublin, let me recommend to you some apps that will help you in your daily routine.
Dublin is not a very big city but there is a good network of public transport of all kinds, from buses and trains to trams and taxi services. Not everybody lives in the centre of the city but this is not going to stop us moving around this lovely city! Here I give you the definitive list of transportation apps:
Real Time Information
Provided by the National Transport Authority and Dublin City Council, Real Time Information is the only app in Ireland that provides you with real time departure information for all the public transport in Dublin, including Bus Éireann, DART, Iarnród Éireann and Luas. This great tool allows you not only to check the times but also to discover all the stops and stations closest to you and on the entire map. You can check out the best routes, save your regular routes, access travel updates and much more.
If the public bus is the only service you usually take and you are not interested in having information about other transport options you can download Dublin Bus. This is a fantastic app that I use every day! On it you can find relevant information about the bus routes in Dublin: departure times, stops near you, a fares calculator, news and updates, route planner, among many other options. Simple and functional!
Furthermore, for those who prefer to ride a bicycle instead of getting on public transport, we also have the option of Just Eat dublinbikes. Its main function is to check the availability of bikes at the stations so when you go to get a bike you’ll know one is waiting for you. You can also check the status of your account.
Finally, I find it very useful to have an app to get a taxi, especially if you are travelling at off peak hours like during the night; or when you oversleep and you don´t have enough time to grab public transport (like to school or to your job). In this case, I suggest you use MyTaxi or Uber, two apps that work in a very similar way. You just need to type in where you want to go and the driver will pick you up. The app will let you know how long you need to wait and you can track your taxi’s arrival on the map. Easy peasy!
Entertainment and leisure
Transportation is not the only interesting thing we can find on the applications in Dublin, not at all! There are a few more apps that I am sure you will find practical and enjoyable and you won´t regret downloading! Check them out:
Attention, shopping addicts! I have found the best and ultimate app to save money! I am talking about Groupon, where you can find excellent offers on all kind of products and services such as a lovely massage, a delicious dinner or beautiful presents for your family and friends (and for yourself too).
Dublin Map and Walks
If you want to discover every single sight in your new city, you need an app like this one: Dublin Map and Walks. I am pretty sure that the best way to see a city is on foot and this app is a mini self-guided tour that will show you the best paths and tracks to follow and includes a lot of information about what you will find along the way. Try it!
Dublin – Travel Guide
Tripwolf is doing an excellent job with its travel guide ap. The layout is really nice and the app is very useful. It contains everything you could possibly need to check out in a new city like Dublin: the best sights, places to visit, attractions, gastronomy, tours and activities!
NED Training Centre App
At NEDTC we realised how great apps are to enhance our activities and services. Therefore, we have recently developed an app that you can download onto your own mobile phone. Check everything related to your attendance, holiday allowance, assessment results, school news and MORE!
